I'm sure this website is premature, and probably very few people other than me will be looking at it for some time. I mean, come on, it's a website for a book that doesn't exist yet. I tend to get a little hyperfocused when I get excited about something - so the unfinished book already has an imprint with its own logo, a website, a Facebook page and an Instagram account.
So, how did this all come about. Well, I'm a veterinarian. I have a house full of animals. I also have two little girls, 2 and 3 1/2 years old, who love to hear stories about their mommy, the doggy doctor. And I has a wonderfully supportive and creative husband, who two weeks ago came home from work while I was giving the kids a bath and said "You know, you should write a kid's book." And so, The Doggy Doctor was born.
It took me a little over a week to knock out the first draft, between one morning spent in Starbucks and writing in between appointments at work. I definitely hadn't expected to write the story of a dog with a foreign body for kids in rhyming verse, but that's what came out. And then I dove head first into Facebook groups for children's writers, self-publishing versus traditional, editors, illustrators, imprints and another handful of books in my series.
And now this blog. I'm going to document all the steps it will take to bring this book to life. Maybe no one will read it, and that's cool. One day my kids will be able to look back and see everything their mom and dad went through to put this book in their hands. But maybe it will inspire others who have an interest in writing to try it to give it a try to.
Enjoy the journey to come...
